How It Works

The London Congestion Charge is £15 per day for driving within the Congestion Charge Zone in central London. The zone operates Monday to Friday, 7am-6pm, and weekends and bank holidays 12pm-6pm. Payment must be made by midnight on the day of travel or by midnight on the following charging day for a £17.50 late payment.

Certain vehicles are exempt or receive discounts. Electric vehicles (zero-emission capable) registered with TfL are exempt through the Cleaner Vehicle Discount. Residents within the zone receive a 90% discount. Blue Badge holders, licensed taxis, buses and some hybrid vehicles also qualify for exemptions or discounts.

Auto Pay can be set up to automatically charge your account each day your vehicle enters the zone, avoiding the risk of late payment penalties (£160, reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days). This calculator estimates your weekly and annual congestion charge costs based on how often you drive into the zone.

London Congestion Charge 2026. £15/day for vehicles entering the central London Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ) between 07:00-18:00 Monday-Friday, 12:00-18:00 Saturday-Sunday and bank holidays. Pay via TfL website (apps), at shops with PayPoint, or AutoPay (recommended — registers card, auto-charges monthly). Late payment penalties: £80 within 14 days, £160 if longer.

ULEZ vs Congestion Charge — different things. ULEZ: £12.50/day, ALL OF LONDON (since August 2023), 24/7 every day, for non-compliant vehicles only. Congestion Charge: £15/day, central London only, weekday/weekend daytime, ALL vehicles regardless of emissions (until 2026). If you enter central London in a non-compliant ICE car on weekday: pay BOTH £12.50 ULEZ + £15 Congestion = £27.50/day.

Exempt vehicles. Fully exempt: licensed black taxis, vehicles for blue badge holders (registered), motorcycles, mopeds, electric vehicles (until December 2025 — exemption ending), some emergency vehicles. Auto Pay reduces cost to £14/day (saves £1/day for regular users). Resident discount: 90% off for 4-5 years for those living within CCZ (rare these days).

Other UK Clean Air Zones with charges. Bath CAZ: £9/day private cars (Class D), £100/day HGVs. Birmingham CAZ: £8/day cars + commercial. Bristol, Sheffield, Portsmouth: various rates. Manchester CAZ: cancelled 2022. Most charge non-compliant vehicles only — check via local authority website + Vehicle Compliance Checker. Glasgow LEZ: ban non-compliant vehicles entirely (£60 fine), no daily charge option.

Example: Commuting into central London 4 days/week (petrol car)

  1. Daily charge: £15
  2. Weekly cost (4 days): £60
  3. Annual cost (48 working weeks): £2,880
  4. With Auto Pay: same cost, no penalty risk
  5. Zone resident discount (90%): £1.50/day = £288/year
