How It Works

The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) covers all of Greater London. Vehicles that do not meet the emission standards are charged £12.50 per day. For most petrol cars, the standard is Euro 4 (generally vehicles first registered after January 2006). For diesel cars, the standard is Euro 6 (generally first registered after September 2015).

Motorcycles and mopeds must meet Euro 3 (generally first registered after July 2007). Vans, minibuses and specialist vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow the same petrol and diesel standards as cars. Larger vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes, buses and coaches) are subject to the separate Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and must meet Euro VI standards.

You can check your vehicle's compliance by entering your registration number on the TfL vehicle checker. Non-compliant vehicles driving in the ULEZ face charges of £12.50/day plus a £160 penalty if not paid by midnight the following day (reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days). This calculator estimates your annual ULEZ costs if your vehicle is non-compliant.

What is ULEZ? Ultra Low Emission Zone in London (and similar zones in other UK cities). Charges £12.50/day for non-compliant vehicles entering the zone. ULEZ covers all of Greater London since August 2023 (originally just central London 2019). Compliant vehicles (emission standards): petrol cars Euro 4 (registered after 2005), diesel cars Euro 6 (registered 2016+), motorcycles Euro 3 (registered 2007+). Use TfL's 'Check Your Vehicle' tool with your registration.

Other UK city Clean Air Zones (CAZ). Bath CAZ: £9-£100/day for non-compliant taxis, buses, lorries (private cars exempt). Birmingham CAZ: £8-£50/day private cars + commercial. Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield: similar Class B/C/D zones. Liverpool, Newcastle: planning CAZ. Glasgow Low Emission Zone (2024): bans non-compliant vehicles entirely (£60 fines). Edinburgh LEZ (2024): same pattern. Check each city's TfL-equivalent before driving in.

How to pay. TfL website or AutoPay (auto-charges your registered card monthly). Pay within 4 days of journey, OR up to 90 days before. Late payment within 14 days = no penalty. Missing it = £180 fine (reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days). Many drivers don't realise they entered ULEZ — fines are issued via ANPR cameras and post weeks later. Set up AutoPay if you drive non-compliant vehicle in London occasionally.

Scrappage schemes and ULEZ avoidance. London's scrappage scheme (active until funds run out) offers £2,000 for scrapping non-compliant cars; £1,000 for motorcycles; £10,000 for vans/minibuses. Income/benefit-based eligibility for cars (DWP recipients qualify, others may not). Birmingham, Bradford, and other CAZ cities have similar local schemes. Replace non-compliant vehicle with: EV (zero emissions), Euro 6 diesel, or Euro 4+ petrol. Used compliant vehicles from £3-£5k upward.

Example: 2012 diesel car, driving in London 3 days/week

  1. Vehicle: 2012 diesel (Euro 5, non-compliant)
  2. Daily ULEZ charge: £12.50
  3. Weekly cost (3 days): £37.50
  4. Annual cost (50 weeks): £1,875
  5. Scrappage scheme payment (if eligible): up to £2,000
  6. Upgrading to compliant vehicle saves £1,875/year
