How It Works
The UK uses a mix of metric and imperial weight measurements. Metric (kilograms and grams) is standard in shops and packaging by law, but many people still think in stones and pounds for body weight. This converter handles kg, pounds (lb), stones (st) and ounces (oz).
One stone equals 14 pounds, and one pound equals 0.4536 kilograms. The converter handles all combinations and displays results in the format most commonly used in UK daily life — for example, body weight in stones and pounds and food in kilograms or grams.
UK weight units and conversions. 1 stone (st) = 14 pounds (lb) = 6.350 kg. 1 lb = 16 ounces (oz) = 0.4536 kg = 453.6 g. 1 kg = 2.205 lb = 0.1575 st. Common: 70 kg = 11st 0.4lb. UK supermarkets use kg for produce; people often state body weight in stones (12st 5lb); gyms use kg. Medical (NHS) records: kg only. Driving licences: kg for vehicle weights since 2014.
Body weight ranges by NHS BMI category. BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). For 1.75m (5'9"): underweight <56.7kg (8st 13lb); healthy 56.7-76.6kg (8st 13lb - 12st 0lb); overweight 76.6-91.9kg; obese ≥91.9kg (14st 6lb). 1.60m: 47-64kg healthy. 1.70m: 53-72kg. 1.80m: 60-81kg. Asian populations use lower thresholds (overweight from BMI 23). BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat — combine with waist circumference (<94cm men, <80cm women).
Cooking weights — converting US recipes. US recipes use cups (volume), UK recipes use grams (weight). 1 US cup flour = 125g; 1 cup sugar = 200g; 1 cup butter = 227g; 1 cup rice = 200g; 1 cup milk = 240g. UK Imperial cup = 284ml ≠ US cup = 237ml — always check origin. Spoons: 1 tbsp = 15ml UK/US; 1 tsp = 5ml universally. Best practice for UK: weigh in grams for accurate baking.
UK vehicle and shipping weights. Driving licence categories by weight: Cat B (standard) — up to 3,500kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass); Cat C1 — 3,500-7,500kg; Cat C — over 7,500kg HGV. Bridge weight limits: signed in tonnes (1 tonne = 1,000kg = 0.984 long tons UK = 1.102 US tons). Royal Mail: small parcel up to 2kg; medium up to 20kg; over 30kg uses pallet courier. Hand luggage typical airline limit: 7-10kg.
Kilograms and pounds — quick mental conversions. kg → lb: multiply by 2.2 (precise 2.205). lb → kg: divide by 2.2. Stone → kg: multiply by 6.35. Sample: 80 kg ≈ 176 lb ≈ 12st 8lb. 12 stone = 76.2 kg. 100 lb = 45.4 kg. UK weighs babies in lb-oz (7lb 5oz typical), then medical switches to kg by age 1. Olympic weights: bench press 100kg = 220lb; standard barbell 20kg = 44lb. Aviation cargo: kg only.
Example: Converting 75 kg
- 75 kg = 165.35 lb
- 75 kg = 11 stone 11.35 lb
- 75 kg = 2,645.55 oz
