How It Works
Speeding fines in England and Wales are calculated using a banding system based on how far over the speed limit you were driving. Band A (1-10 mph over in a 30 zone equivalent) starts at 25-75% of weekly income. Band B (11-20 mph over) is 75-125% of weekly income. Band C (21+ mph over) is 125-175% of weekly income with possible disqualification.
The minimum fine is £100 with 3 penalty points. In some cases of minor speeding, you may be offered a speed awareness course (typically £100, no points) instead of prosecution. Penalty points range from 3-6, and accumulating 12 points within 3 years results in a minimum 6-month driving ban.
Fines are capped at £1,000 (or £2,500 on a motorway). Aggravating factors such as poor road conditions, driving near schools or previous convictions can push the fine towards the top of the band. This calculator estimates the likely fine and points based on the speed recorded, the speed limit and your circumstances.
UK speeding penalties — fines and points. Minor speeding (10-15% over limit): Fixed Penalty Notice £100 + 3 points (or speed awareness course if first offence). Moderate (20-40% over): Band B fine — 75-125% of weekly income, 4-6 points OR 7-28 days disqualification. Serious (50%+ over): Band C fine — 125-175% of weekly income, 6 points or 7-56 days disqualification, court appearance mandatory. Maximum fine: £1,000 (£2,500 on motorways). 12 points in 3 years = automatic 6-month ban (totting up).
Speed Awareness Course — when offered. Available for: 10-13 mph over limit (in 30 zone), 10-14 mph over (40-50 zones), 11-19 mph over (70 zone). Cost £80-£100 (varies by police force). Takes 4 hours, often online since 2020. NOT available if: had a course within last 3 years; refused; serious speed. Avoids fine AND points — recommended if eligible. Doesn't go on driving licence (not a conviction) but insurer may ask 'have you completed a speed awareness course' and increase premium.
Speeding insurance impact. SP30 (most common code, speeding on public road): 3 points typically adds 10-25% to insurance premium. SP50 (motorway): similar penalty. Multiple endorsements: each subsequent SP adds further premium. Stays on licence 4 years (must declare to insurer for 5 years). After 5 years: no longer disclosable, but insurer may ask 'any motoring convictions in last 5 years'. Best practice: notify insurer at time of offence — failure to disclose voids policy. Some insurers (Admiral, Direct Line) offer 'no premium increase' for first SP30 if otherwise clean.
Court appearance and serious cases. Mandatory court appearance: speeding 50%+ over limit; aggravating factors (other offences, driving manner). Magistrates' Court hearing: usually £20-£50 court costs added. Penalty: Band C fine + 6 points or disqualification. Disqualification options: 'special reasons' defence (medical emergency); 'exceptional hardship' plea (job loss = lose home). Solicitor recommended for serious cases — Drug/Driving solicitor £300-£800. Driving ban 6+ months: extended retest required to regain licence.
New driver rule and totting up. New Drivers Act 1995: if you get 6+ points within 2 years of passing test, licence REVOKED. Must reapply for provisional, pass theory + practical again. Doesn't apply after 2 years post-test. Totting up: 12 points in 3 years = automatic 6-month ban (first offence). Repeat ban within 3 years = 12 months. Third = 24 months. 'Exceptional hardship' can keep licence but rarely succeeds. Drivers age 60+ stops accumulating SP points 4 years after issuance vs younger drivers 5 years.

- Starting point: 100% of weekly income
- Weekly income: £600
- Base fine: £600
- Penalty points: 4-6
