How It Works
UK clothing sizes differ from US and EU sizes. For women's tops and dresses, UK sizes are typically two sizes smaller than US sizes (UK 10 = US 6) and numerically different from EU sizes (UK 10 = EU 38). Men's sizes often align more closely but still vary by brand.
This converter translates between UK, US and EU sizes for men's and women's tops, trousers, dresses and jackets. It also provides the corresponding body measurements (chest, waist, hips) in both centimetres and inches so you can check the fit against a brand's own size chart.
UK, EU, US clothing size conversions. Women's dresses: UK 8 = EU 36 = US 4 = IT 40. UK 10 = EU 38 = US 6 = IT 42. UK 12 = EU 40 = US 8 = IT 44. UK 14 = EU 42 = US 10 = IT 46. Men's chest: UK/US 36 = EU 46 = small; 38 = 48 = medium; 40 = 50 = large; 42 = 52 = XL; 44 = 54 = XXL. Always check brand-specific size guides — vary by 1-2 sizes between brands.
How clothes are measured. Women's dresses: bust + waist + hip in cm. UK size 10: bust 87-90cm; waist 68-72cm; hip 93-96cm. Men's shirts: chest size (inches around fullest part). Trousers: waist + inside leg. Shoes: foot length (heel to longest toe) + width. Measure over underwear, standing relaxed. UK department stores M&S, John Lewis: offer free in-store alterations on suits.
Different brands run different sizes. Italian/Spanish brands (Zara, Mango): run small — go UP 1 size. French (Sandro, Sezane): slim cut. American (Gap, J.Crew): generally true to UK norm but 'vanity sizing' makes some smaller than label. Asian brands (Uniqlo): run small. Vintage clothing pre-1990s: 2 sizes smaller than modern equivalents. Always check brand size guide before ordering online.
Children's clothing sizes UK. Babies: 0-3 months, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, 12-18, 18-24. Toddlers/children by AGE: 2-3 years, 3-4, etc. Heights appear on labels from age 5: 110cm, 116cm, 122cm. Age vs size: 80% of UK children fit 'their' age size. School uniforms typically run small (M&S, John Lewis). Always check height/chest on label — age is rough guide only.
Specialist clothing — UK conventions. Suits: UK chest 38R (regular), 38S (short), 38L (long) — measure inside leg for trouser length. Wedding dresses: 2-3 sizes larger than ready-to-wear (size up). Lingerie: bra size = band (cm under bust) + cup (cm bust − band). UK 34C = band 75cm, cup +12cm = bust 87cm. Maternity: typically same as pre-pregnancy size — adjusts to bump. Plus sizes: UK 16+ — Yours, Evans, Asos Curve.
