How It Works

Carer's Allowance is the main state benefit for unpaid carers. For 2026/27 it pays £81.90 per week (£4,258.80 per year). To qualify you must care for someone for at least 35 hours per week who receives a qualifying disability benefit: PIP Daily Living (either rate), Attendance Allowance, or DLA care component at the middle or highest rate.

There is a weekly net earnings limit of £151. After deducting income tax, NI, pension contributions, and 50% of any qualifying pension premium costs, your net weekly earnings must not exceed this amount. If you earn more in any given week, Carer's Allowance is not payable for that week.

Claiming Carer's Allowance also entitles you to the Carer Element in Universal Credit (£198.31/month in 2026/27). If you already receive State Pension or another benefit at the same or higher rate, you may be 'underlying entitled' — you won't receive the cash payment but still qualify for the Carer Element in UC.

Carer's Allowance updated rate 2026/27. Rate raised from £81.90 to £83.30/week April 2026 (£4,331.60/year). Earnings limit raised from £151 to £196/week net. Many resources still quote old figures — official source is gov.uk/carers-allowance. Paid weekly or every 4 weeks via bank transfer. Counts as taxable income for HMRC but no NI required.

Carer's Credit — protects State Pension if not eligible for CA. Care 20+ hours/week but cared-for person doesn't receive qualifying benefit? Apply for Carer's Credit (free Class 3 NI credits). Protects State Pension entitlement. Apply via gov.uk/carers-credit form CC1, backdate up to 1 tax year. Often missed — saves thousands in lost State Pension over working life.

How to maximise eligibility around the £196 limit. Pension contributions count as deductions — sacrifice 50% of net pay into pension to stay below £196 (and gain pension tax relief). Childcare costs (paid for during caring): deductible. Self-employed business expenses: deductible. 'Cliff edge' at £197/week: losing £83.30/week CA — work around it. Restructure salary or self-employed invoicing if marginal.

Other UK carer benefits 2026. Council Tax: 25% discount if only adult + disabled person. Carer's Leave Act 2024: 1 week unpaid leave/year (new right from April 2024). Free flu vaccine. Free needs assessment by local council (Carer's Assessment). Bereavement: CA continues 8 weeks after cared-for person's death. Respite/replacement care funding via council. Reduced prescriptions: PPC £33/3 months or £114/year. NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment for cared-for person.

State Pension and Carer's Allowance — overlapping benefits rule. Full State Pension £230.25/week (2026/27) exceeds CA £83.30/week. Receiving full SP: CA not paid as separate cash (overlapping benefits rule). BUT you have 'underlying entitlement' — improves other benefit calculations (Pension Credit, Council Tax Reduction, etc.). Apply for CA even when on State Pension — gives access to Carer Premium/Element on other benefits.

Example: Part-time carer earning £200 gross per week

  1. Gross weekly pay: £200
  2. Less income tax and NI (approx £25): net £175
  3. Less 50% of £60/week pension contribution (£30): adjusted net £145
  4. £145 < £151 limit → Carer’s Allowance of £81.90/week is payable

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Carer's Allowance in 2026/27?
Carer's Allowance is £81.90 per week (£4,258.80 per year) for 2026/27. It is taxable but does not affect means-tested benefits — instead it is taken into account as income in calculations for Universal Credit and other income-related benefits.
What is the earnings limit for Carer's Allowance?
Your net weekly earnings must not exceed £151 per week to receive Carer's Allowance. Net earnings are calculated after deducting income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, and 50% of any pension premium costs. Self-employed carers use their weekly profit after allowable expenses.
Can I claim Carer's Allowance if I receive a State Pension?
If your State Pension is the same amount as or higher than Carer's Allowance (£81.90/week), you cannot receive both — only the higher of the two is paid. However, you can still be 'underlying entitled' to Carer's Allowance, which triggers the Carer Element in Universal Credit (£198.31/month in 2026/27).
