Disclaimer
This calculator is provided for informational purposes only and should not be considered as financial or tax advice. All calculations are performed locally in your browser — no personal data is collected or sent to our servers. Rates and thresholds are sourced from HMRC and GOV.UK and are updated for the current tax year. Always verify results with HMRC or consult a qualified professional before making financial decisions.
How It Works
Your total student finance package combines several elements: the tuition fee loan (up to £9,535 for 2025/26, paid directly to the university), the maintenance loan (means-tested, paid to you) and any grants or bursaries. Some students also qualify for Disabled Students' Allowances or Childcare Grants.
This calculator estimates your total package by combining tuition and maintenance loans with any additional grants. Tuition fee loans are not means-tested and cover up to the full fee. Maintenance loans are means-tested on household income. Additional grants (such as the Parents' Learning Allowance or Adult Dependants' Grant) have separate eligibility criteria.
Enter your household income, dependants status and study details. The calculator shows each component and the total finance available, as well as what arrives as a loan (to be repaid) versus a grant (non-repayable). Remember that tuition fee loans go directly to your university, not into your bank account.
Example: Household income £30,000, living away from home outside London
- Tuition fee loan: £9,535 (paid to university)
- Maintenance loan: ~£8,690 (means-tested)
- Total finance package: £18,225
- Paid to you in cash: £8,690 (in 3 termly instalments)
