How It Works

Kitchen renovation costs in the UK vary enormously by specification. A budget kitchen (flat-pack units, laminate worktops, basic appliances) costs £5,000–£10,000. A mid-range kitchen (solid-wood doors, quartz worktops, integrated appliances) runs to £10,000–£20,000. A premium kitchen (bespoke cabinetry, natural stone, high-end appliances) can exceed £25,000–£40,000 or more.

Installation costs are separate: fitting a kitchen typically costs £3,000–£8,000 depending on scope. This includes removal of the old kitchen, plumbing, electrics (new circuits may be needed for induction hobs), tiling, plastering and flooring. A full kitchen refit usually takes 2–4 weeks.

Enter your kitchen size, specification level and the scope of work. The calculator breaks the estimate into units, worktops, appliances, plumbing, electrics, tiling and fitting labour. It also flags items that need Building Regulations notification (such as new electrical circuits or moving a gas supply).

UK kitchen costs 2026. Budget (Howdens, B&Q): £4,000-£8,000 fitted. Mid-range (Wren, Magnet): £8,000-£20,000 fitted. Premium (Neptune, deVOL, Plain English): £25,000-£80,000+. Per linear metre: £700-£3,000 (units + worktops + appliances). Average UK kitchen 2026: £12,500 total cost (Which? survey). Sample 4m × 3m kitchen: typically £8,000-£25,000 depending on quality and appliances. Major cost split: 30% units; 20% worktops; 25% appliances; 15% installation; 10% other (flooring, lighting, plumbing).

Worktops and surfaces. Laminate: £25-£80/m² — budget, less durable, lifespan 8-15 years. Solid wood: £80-£200/m² — warm, requires oiling. Quartz (engineered stone): £200-£500/m² — most popular premium UK choice, durable, stain-resistant, 25+ year life. Granite: £150-£500/m² — natural, hard, can stain if not sealed. Marble: £250-£700/m² — beautiful but stains and scratches. Solid surface (Corian): £200-£500/m² — seamless, can sand out scratches. Stainless steel: £300-£600/m² — commercial look.

Appliance costs. Built-in oven: £300-£2,000+. Induction hob: £350-£1,500. Extractor hood: £200-£1,000. Built-in microwave: £200-£800. Integrated fridge-freezer: £600-£2,500. Dishwasher: £350-£1,200. Washing machine: £300-£1,000. Range cooker (statement piece): £800-£8,000+. American-style fridge: £800-£4,000. Wine fridge: £400-£2,500. Pyrolitic self-cleaning oven: £600+ premium. Brand choice: Bosch, Miele, Neff dominate UK mid-premium; AGA/Rangemaster for traditional country kitchen.

Hidden kitchen costs. Plumbing alterations: £400-£1,500 (moving sink, dishwasher). Electrical work (rewires, extra sockets, lighting): £800-£3,000. Plastering (post-removal of old kitchen): £400-£1,500. Flooring (new tiles or LVT): £1,500-£4,000. Splashback (tiles, glass, stone): £300-£2,000. Lighting (downlights, pendant, under-cabinet): £500-£2,000. Decoration (paint, doors, skirting): £400-£1,500. Skip hire for old kitchen: £200-£400. Always budget 15-25% contingency above quoted price.

Where to save and where to splurge. Save: cabinet doors (replace doors only on existing carcasses — £1,500-£3,000 vs £8,000+ new); appliances (mid-range Bosch/Whirlpool reliable, much cheaper than Miele/Gaggenau); flooring (LVT looks like wood at 30-50% cost); lighting (B&Q LED downlights £5-£15 vs designer £50+). Splurge on: worktops (most-used surface, daily contact); sink and taps (constant use); flooring (foot traffic); door handles/knobs (cheap ones make whole kitchen look cheap). Lighting is best mid-budget area for transformation effect.

Example: Mid-range kitchen, 12 m², full refit

  1. Units and worktops: £8,000
  2. Appliances (oven, hob, extractor, dishwasher, fridge-freezer): £3,500
  3. Plumbing and electrics: £2,500
  4. Tiling, flooring, plastering: £2,000
  5. Installation labour: £5,000 — Total: ~£21,000 including VAT
