How It Works

Free school meals (FSM) are available in England for children whose parents receive certain qualifying benefits. These include Universal Credit with a household income under £7,400 per year (after tax and not including benefits), Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit with income under £16,190, and the guaranteed element of Pension Credit.

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive universal infant free school meals regardless of family income. This is a separate scheme and does not require a benefits-based eligibility check. However, registering for benefits-based FSM still provides additional funding to schools through the Pupil Premium.

Registering for free school meals can be worth over £1,000 per child per year in meal savings. It also triggers Pupil Premium funding of £1,480 per primary pupil or £1,050 per secondary pupil for the school, which is used to support disadvantaged children's education.
